Smoke alarm
When it comes to home safety, there is no such thing as being too prepared. Having a working smoke alarm is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your family from the dangers of fire. If you need help installing or maintaining your smoke alarms, Hott Electrics smoke alarm services can help.
Smoke alarm regulations
Smoke alarms are required in all new homes and units in NSW, and must be installed and maintained in accordance with the Smoke Alarms in Residential Buildings Regulation.

Smoke alarms save lives
In a fire, every second counts. A working smoke alarm gives you and your family the early warning you need to escape safely. As a Wollongong homeowner, you are responsible for the safety of your family. This includes making sure that your home is equipped with working smoke alarms. While most people think of smoke alarms as a single device, there are actually several different types of smoke alarms that are designed for different areas of the home.
Smoke alarm types
There are two types of smoke alarms – ionisation and photoelectric. Both types are equally effective in detecting smoke, but ionisation alarms are more sensitive to smaller, invisible particles of smoke that are produced by fast-flaming fires. Photoelectric alarms are more sensitive to larger smoke particles that are produced by slow-smouldering fires.
It is recommended that you have both types of alarms installed in your home, as they complement each other and provide the best possible protection.
Home smoke alarm installation
It is law to have a smoke alarm installed on every floor of a residential building where people sleep. We recommended having smoke alarms installed in every bedroom, as well as in hallways that lead to bedrooms, and in any other areas where a fire is likely to start. They should be mounted on the ceiling, at least 300mm away from any wall, and at least 150mm away from any light fittings.
Smoke alarm safety plan
When it comes to home safety, there is no such thing as being too cautious. That’s why it’s important to have a smoke alarm safety plan in place in case of a fire. Smoke alarms are an important part of any fire safety plan. They are designed to detect the presence of smoke and sound an alarm to alert occupants of a fire.
Hard wired smoke alarms
Hard-wired smoke alarms have many advantages over battery-operated smoke alarms. They are less likely to be disabled because they are out of reach, and they continue to work even if there is a power outage. Hard-wired smoke alarms are also less likely to be forgotten about because they are always there, reminding you to test them monthly and to change the back-up batteries at least once a year.
Trusted smoke alarm service
Smoke alarms have a limited lifespan and should be replaced every 10 years. If your smoke alarm is more than 10 years old, it may not be working as well as it should. Get in touch with the team at Hott Electrics to have a safety inspection of your home's electrical system and to see whether you are smoke alarm compliant or ready in the case of a house fire.
