RCD safety switch

An RCD, or residual current device, is a life-saving device which is designed to switch off an electrical circuit when it detects an imbalance between the live and neutral currents. This prevents electrocution and fires by cutting off the power before a dangerous situation can occur. From 2018, it is now mandatory for ALL circuits installed in domestic or residential homes to be protected by an RCD (Residual Current Device) otherwise known as a “safety switch”. Hott Electrics can supply and install an RCD or safety switch so your home or business is compliant.

Shock protection

As the world progresses, so does the technology that we use to make our lives easier and safer. RCD safety switches are one such technology that has been developed to protect us from the dangers of electric shock.

An RCD, or residual current device, is a safety switch that is designed to trip and break the circuit if there is an imbalance of current flow. This can happen if there is a fault in the electrical wiring or if someone comes into contact with a live wire. RCDs are a vital safety feature in any home or office as they can prevent serious injuries or even death from electric shock.

Our ceiling fan services include:

Type A & type B RCDs

There are two types of RCDs: type A and type B. Type A RCDs are designed to protect against alternating current (AC), while type B RCDs protect against direct current (DC). Both types of RCDs are required by law to be fitted in all new homes and office buildings in Australia.

Prevent the flow of current

RCDs work by constantly monitoring the current flowing through the circuit. If there is an imbalance, the RCD will trip and break the circuit, preventing the flow of current. This can happen in as little as 0.03 seconds, which is fast enough to prevent serious injury or death from electric shock.

Test & inspect your safety switch

RCDs are a vital safety feature in any home or office, and should be regularly tested to ensure they are working correctly. If you have any concerns about your RCD, or would like to have one installed, or have your current switch inspected please contact Hott Electrics for an inspection.
